David Weekley Homes Collects Thousands of Meals, Donations During Annual Food Drive
Orlando, FL (December 5, 2019): More than 2,500 people locally – and 60,000 nationwide – walked away from the Thanksgiving table with a full belly and a happy heart this year, thanks to the partnership of David Weekley Homes and 18 charities across the U.S. In Orlando, for the fifth year David Weekley Homes teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes donated food to more than 550 partners across six Central Florida counties to feed people in need.
“David Weekley Homes visited Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida on November 15 with truckloads of nonperishable food drive collections, an army of volunteers and a monetary gift to help further enhance the volunteer experience,” said Samantha Westley, Volunteer Assistant at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “In addition to their donations, they helped sort more than 5,500 pounds of food.”
From November 1 – 15, David Weekley Homes hosted its fifth annual companywide Thanksgiving Drive, bringing together its homeowners, real estate agents, vendors, trade partners and team members to collect 150,000 pounds of food for nearly 60,000 people across the country.
“It’s truly a powerful feeling knowing our donations are going to the community around us,” said Austin Butler, Lead Builder for David Weekley Homes in Orlando. “I’ve been in situations where food was scarce, so I know firsthand how important these donations are, especially around the holidays.”
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serves the greater Orlando area by partnering with 550 emergency food assistance programs to distribute nonperishable food donations to hungry children and adults. The nonprofit also transforms lives through its 16-week culinary training program, which allows economically-challenged adults to prepare for careers in the culinary industry.
“It’s because of support from members of the community like those at David Weekley Homes that we were able to provide more than 63 million meals to those in need last year. Thank you for your support!” said Westley.
To assist Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida this year, David Weekley Homes collected approximately 3,000 pounds of nonperishable food items during the two-week drive. The builder also donated $3,000 toward the purchase of keyless entry lockers for food bank volunteers. The Thanksgiving Drive is a volunteer and philanthropic initiative of the company’s CARE program, which allows the extended David Weekley Homes family to live out its purpose of Building Dreams, Enhancing Lives in each of the communities in which it builds.
“Working with Second Harvest and our CARE program is a great opportunity to give back to the community,” said Josh McChesney, Senior Builder for David Weekley Homes in Orlando. “It reminds me that the world is full of great people who dedicate themselves to making this a better place to live.”
