David Weekley Homes Donates Thanksgiving Meals as Part of Holiday Food Drive

Team Members collect more than 2,600 pounds of food for the holiday

Indianapolis, IN (December 13, 2016): David Weekley Homes, the nation’s largest privately-held builder, hosted its second annual, companywide Thanksgiving Drive, collecting an aggregate of 147,000 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 20 participating markets. The company’s efforts provided more than 149,000 meals to local families.

Locally, more than 1,000 pounds of turkey and nearly 1,620 pounds of pasta items were collected during the two-week drive, which ran from November 2 to 16. Indianapolis team members delivered the items to Second Helpings, Inc. to distribute to families in time for the holiday. In addition, Second Helpings, Inc. received a $6,000 donation from the David Weekley Family Foundation.

“It is always extremely rewarding to participate in all our CARE efforts. This year was really special because we had some homeowners in our Westfield community of Harmony who shopped together as a small group to purchase items for the drive. This really symbolizes what the core belief of our CARE initiative is all about: Giving back to the community and enhancing lives,” said Deidre Hammonds, David Weekley Homes Harmony Sales Consultant.

In Indianapolis, the Thanksgiving Drive benefitted Second Helpings, Inc., an organization that fights hunger with volunteers and staff who rescue prepared and perishable food from wholesalers, retailers and restaurants, preventing unnecessary waste. That rescued food is used to create 4,000 hot, nutritious meals each day that are distributed to 80 social service agencies that feed people in need. In addition, Second Helpings, Inc. hosts a culinary job training program that trains disadvantaged adults for careers in the food service industry.

“The donations from David Weekley Homes will be used to provide more than 14,000 hot, nutritious meals this holiday season. These meals will be served to 85 social service agencies throughout the Indianapolis community, such as low income day care centers, senior centers, homeless shelters, and churches. Thank you for providing sustenance, hope and opportunity to those who need it most,” said Amber Jett, Second Helpings Inc., Corporate & Donor Relations Manager.

The Thanksgiving Drive is one of the initiatives of the company’s CARE program that joins team members with homeowners, homebuyers, community partners and local nonprofit organizations to live out its purpose of building dreams, enhancing lives in all of the communities in which it builds.

Team members from David Weekley Homes, home owners, realtors, vendors and business partners donated 2,620 pounds of turkey and pasta items to Second Helpings, Inc. to benefit families in need.
