David Weekley Homes Donates Thanksgiving Meals as Part of Holiday Food Drive

Orlando, FL (December 6, 2018): David Weekley Homes, the nation’s largest privately-held builder, hosted its fourth annual, companywide Giving Thanks, Giving Back Thanksgiving Drive, collecting an aggregate of more than 183,935 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 18 participating markets. The company’s efforts provided nearly 311,469 meals to local families.

In Orlando, nearly 3,200 pounds of nonperishable items and turkey and more than $1,200 in monetary donations were collected during the two-week drive, which ran from November 1 to 15.

“I am so happy to have worked with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida again for our Thanksgiving Drive,” said Danielle Doyal, warranty coordinator for David Weekley Homes in Orlando. “They do an incredible job helping central Floridians struggling with hunger. And, I’m so proud to be part of a team that is committed to serving our community and enhancing lives. I am humbled by the generosity of our team members, homeowners and business partners.”

Locally, the Giving Thanks, Giving Back Thanksgiving Drive benefitted Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a nonprofit that collects and dispenses food donations to more than 550 feeding partners across six Central Florida counties. David Weekley team members provided the collected items to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to distribute to families in time for the holiday. An additional $3,000 donation from The David Weekley Family Foundation will help the nonprofit convert 50 volunteer lockers to keyless entry.

David Weekley’s Orlando Division also participated in Canstruction® Orlando, an event benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida that gives teams the opportunity to collect donated canned food items and use them to design and build a structure. In celebration of the event’s 25th anniversary, the David Weekley Homes team constructed a slice of cake made from more than 3,000 cans and took home the award for “Best Meal.”

“We are grateful to have partners like David Weekley Homes supporting our mission to create hope and nourish lives while multiplying the generosity of a caring community,” said Mindy Ortiz, director of volunteer services for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “In addition to the meals, now our volunteer experience has been improved by the additional grant funds to automate our lockers. Thank you, David Weekley Homes, for all you do!”

The Thanksgiving Drive is an initiative of the company’s CARE program, which joins team members with homeowners, homebuyers, community partners and local nonprofit organizations to live out its purpose of Building Dreams, Enhancing Lives in each of the communities in which it builds.
