Students Benefit from David Weekley Homes Back to School Supply Drive

Orlando, FL (September 7, 2016): David Weekley Homes hosted its second companywide Back to School Supply Drive in 22 cities across the country. In Orlando, school supplies were collected for A Gift For Teaching, an organization that provides free resources and surplus materials to teachers for their students in need.

“We are blown away by the commitment of the David Weekley Homes team members to A Gift For Teaching,” said Jane Thompson, president of A Gift For Teaching. “Nearly 500 of Central Florida’s most deserving students will be well equipped for school thanks to the generous donation of backpacks filled with our top five essential supplies. To top that, the incredible gift from The David Weekley Family Foundation will help improve our organizational capacity, enhance the efficiency of our Free Store and allow us to be even more sustainable.”

Thousands of items, valued at $7,700, were collected during the two-week drive to fill 500 backpacks with supplies, benefitting 500 children. After collecting the donations, team members invested 21 hours sorting the supplies and delivering them to the organization to ensure the supplies would be distributed in time for the students to begin school with the tools needed to be successful.

“We think Nelson Mandela said it perfectly when he said ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,’” said Jackie Filippi, a sales consultant with David Weekley Homes. “We are thrilled to contribute supplies to those in need this school year.”

“It was very heartwarming to see so many of our team members, homeowners and our David Weekley Homes chaplain get involved in this meaningful drive to benefit the students and teachers in our community,” said Rachel Blackwell, a project coordinator with David Weekley Homes.
